The Dragons Race

AXA Teams Compete in the Finals at the 2014 NYC Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival

Nine weeks of Sunday morning practices and rigorous training paid off for the AXA employee paddler teams at the August 9-10th weekend NYC Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival held in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, in the New York City borough of Queens. The two AXA teams -- AXA Fire Dragons and AXA Water Dragons -- advanced to Sunday's corporate finals, competing against nearly 200 dragon boats from across North America and the Caribbean.

This year AXA both proudly sponsored and raced in the festival, with employees paddling for the 6th consecutive year.  "Dragon boat racing is not just about being the strongest or the fastest. It's a team effort that requires intense synchronization, discipline and focus," said Lisa Luk, a paddler on the AXA Fire Dragons and chair of AXA's Pan-Asian Employee Resource Group. "Training for the NYC Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival takes months and we've formed strong bonds and friendships in the process."

At the AXA Advisors booth, festivalgoers lined up to compete in a chopstick game to win prizes such as AXA kites, fans, and tote bags.  In addition, children enjoyed face painting and balloon twisting at the booth throughout the weekend.

The Flushing, Queens festival is a vibrant display of global cultures and athleticism, from the ancient Chinese dragon boat tradition itself honoring the poet Qu Yuan, to Kerala Indian drummers, to a performance by the Caribbean American Sports and Cultural Youth Movement Steel Orchestra.  Dragon boat teams compete against groups from a diverse cross-section of communities, such as women of the New York Police Department, Trinidadian paddlers, Wall Street analysts and Asian Federal Officers.

For a flavor of the festival, we invite you to watch AXA's Dragon Boat highlights video.
