New York – AXA US, the brand name of AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company and the primary U.S. subsidiary of the global AXA Group (AXA S.A.), today announces the appointment of Dr. Heinz-Juergen Schwering as Chief Risk Officer, replacing Andrew Wallace-Barnett, who has been named Head of Investor Relations for AXA S.A. In this role, Schwering will oversee all financial, insurance, hedging and operational risks to the company, and will be responsible for maintaining the optimal risk discipline model and risk appetite to ensure the continued, sustainable growth of the AXA US enterprise.

Schwering previously held various senior roles at AXA Germany (AXA Konzern AG), including as a member of the Board of Directors, Chief Investment Officer, and Head of the Health Insurance business, where he oversaw strategy, product development, distribution, and claims.

“It is a testament to the strength of the AXA US team that we were able to attract such a talented partner from within the AXA family to fill this important role,” said Chief Financial Officer Anders Malmstrom. “Juergen’s experience as a P&L leader, along with his strategic and risk modeling expertise, will deepen the value we add as a finance organization in helping our business leaders make informed, sound, and objective decisions with respect to the future direction of our company.”

Schwering holds a diploma in economics and business administration from Witten/Herdecke University in Germany and a Ph.D. in economics from Cambridge University. He also conducted his studies in economics at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris, where his academic research focused on the European Monetary Union.
