AXA Research Fund announces exciting new projects

AXA’s international scientific philanthropy, the AXA Research Fund, has announced 44 new project grants

As a global insurance company, AXA is concerned with mitigating risks of all kinds. Through its international scientific philanthropy, the AXA Research Fund, AXA is able to focus its attention on environmental, life and socio-economic risks. The AXA Research Fund awards grants to support academic innovation and to provide researchers with the means and freedom to complete their work while enhancing the public conversation on these important topics.

On April 8, 2016, the AXA Research Fund announced grants for 44 new research projects across 16 countries. Two of these researchers are based in the United States:

Sarah Pressman, University of California Irvine

Exploring the Complex Interactions between Positive Affect, Stress & Health

Through well-designed, causal studies, Dr. Pressman’s work will increase our knowledge of the physiological responses brought on by positive emotions. She hopes that this new degree of precision will contribute to better interventions for stress and that she will ultimately see “happiness levels” treated as a facet of medical care like any other. Stress is inevitable, she knows, “but there may be simple strategies we can use to protect the body.” Dr. Pressman’s research could be a first step toward reducing stress and keeping people healthy and happy. William Donner, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

An Environmental and Socioeconomic Evaluation of Hydrological Risks in Lower South Texas

Dr. William Donner is using an innovative, interdisciplinary approach to explore the vulnerability of communities in southern Texas to potential floods.  These unregulated and impoverished settlements, called colonias, are threatened by their exposure to severe storms. Through a better understanding of their specific vulnerabilities—social and environmental—he hopes to inform better policy to help protect residents of the colonias and populations like them around the world. With the risk of severe weather increasing worldwide, more coastal communities could fall under this category, making efforts to plan for their protection more important than ever. Since its inception in 2007, the AXA Research Fund has provided EUR 149 million to 492 projects in 33 countries.
