Dave S. Hattem

Dave S. Hattem is Senior Executive Vice President and General Counsel of AXA Financial, Inc. He is also Senior Executive Director and General Counsel for AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company as well as a member of the company’s executive committee.

Mr. Hattem leads the company’s law department, including the compliance and corporate secretary’s offices, and sets the strategic direction of the department, ensuring the business areas are advised as to choices and opportunities available under existing law to enable company goals. Since September 2012, he has been a member of the board of the Life Insurance Council of New York. 

Prior to his election as general counsel in 2010, Mr. Hattem served as senior vice president and deputy general counsel, taking on this role in 2004. As deputy general counsel, Mr. Hattem held a variety of leadership positions including oversight responsibility for the Compliance, Corporate, Investment, Benefits, Litigation, Employment and Customer Relations practice groups.

Mr. Hattem joined the law department in 1994 after serving in senior management positions in the Office of the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. He began as an assistant United States attorney in 1985, and went on to become acting chief and deputy chief of the Criminal Division. 

Mr. Hattem began his professional legal career in 1981 as an associate in the Litigation Department of Barrett Smith Schapiro Simon & Armstrong. He earned a J.D. degree from Brooklyn Law School, where he was managing editor of the Law Review, and a B.A. degree with honors in political science from Hunter College of the City of New York.
