Dave S. Hattem

Dave S. Hattem is Senior Executive Director, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for AXA Equitable Life and a member of AXA Equitable Holdings’ management committee. He is responsible for the oversight of the Law Department, including the compliance, government relations and corporate secretary’s functions, helping the company navigate the legal and regulatory environment to achieve its strategic goals. 

Prior to his election as General Counsel, Mr. Hattem served as Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel from 2004 to 2010. As Deputy General Counsel, Mr. Hattem held a variety of leadership positions, including oversight responsibility for the compliance, corporate, investment, benefits, litigation, employment and customer relations practice groups.

He joined the law department in 1994 after serving in senior management positions in the Office of the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. He began as an Assistant United States Attorney in 1985, and went on to become Acting Chief and Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division. Mr. Hattem began his legal career in 1981, as an associate in the Litigation Department of Barrett Smith Schapiro Simon & Armstrong.

In December 2017, he was elected chair of the Life Insurance Council of New York Board of Directors.

He earned a Juris Doctor degree from Brooklyn Law School, where he was managing editor of the Law Review, and a B.A. degree with honors from Hunter College of the City of New York.
